Cameron has two items that are her sense of comfort, or her security items if you will. I’m sure in some point in life we have all had some sort of security item, or ritual, or habit that just made us feel safe.
For Cameron they are her pacifier, or as we call it her Nubby, and her comfy blanket. Now I know what some of you are thinking, she’s almost 2, she shouldn’t have a nubby, well she does but we try to only give it to her at nap time and bedtime, and we will slowly wean her off that as well. But I’ve also learned to pick my battles, and I’ve found that when she is feeling under the weather, or out of her comfort zone that her pacifier does help calm her down, and if it’s having a toddler tantrum in the middle of the store, or giving her her pacifier for 5 minutes, I’ll choose the pacifier. When she gets up in the morning, we allow her to keep it until breakfast and take it from her, then she gets it back at nap time, and the same goes for after nap time where we take it after her snack until bedtime.
Her blanket she has all the time. It’s always sort of near her when she’s playing, and she does sleep with it. I wish she had chosen a smaller and not so heavy blanket, but it just didn’t happen that way. We have thought of cutting it down and making it smaller, but I feel like she would realize that and it would not go over well. She loves this blanket, and it gives her a sense of home and security. We will try to wean her off of taking it into public soon I’m sure, although right now if we are out and about, it comes with us but stays in the car and she does realize that.
Do your kiddos have anything that comforts them? Or anything they need to bring with them always?
