    • Packing for Disney

Posted at 11:26 am by CS, on October 24, 2019

So you’ve planned your trip to Disney. You know when you’re going, for how long, where you are staying. You booked your dining reservations and your fast passes. Your magic band or tickets have come in the mail and you’re ready to go. Now it’s time to figure out what to pack.

For us, the first time we went to Disney I was not 100% sure what I wanted to bring. I had watched a couple videos of what other packed for their kids to get an idea of what I wanted to bring for Cameron.

Packing for adults is one thing, you bring a few outfits, some comfy shoes, toiletries and you pretty much call it a day. But packing for a child is definitely different. This is what we packed for Cameron for the first trip. I have found it a lot easier the subsequent trips we’ve taken because we learn each time.

Outfits and changes of clothes. I planned out what we would wear each day, and yes I was that mom who matched with her daughter some of the days. So I made sure Cameron had an outfit every day of our trip, and then a backup or nighttime outfit for each day as well. This way if she spilled, or got dirty, or sweaty during the day she had another outfit ready and waiting. We also packed pajamas because of course she needed to wear something to bed.

Swimsuit. I did pack a swim suit in the off chance we went to the pool. We never made it but it was nice to have.

Diapers and other changing items. We made sure to pack plenty of diapers, wipes, lotions and anything else we needed for changing her throughout the day.

Blankets, toys, nighttime items. We packed as much as we could for her to feel as comfortable as possible when it came to naps and bedtime. We brought her toys, sound machine, blankets so she felt like she was at home.

Feeding items. Made sure to pack snacks, bottles, cups, plates, and anything else she used at home when eating. She was still mostly eating with her hands so a lot of stuff we didn’t use.

Miscellaneous. I’ll admit I overpacked and anything I though we could use I brought. We got a fan and cover for her stroller. Books to read. Extra clothes on top of her other clothes. Also of course we packed her stroller and pack n play for the hotel room. You could rent these but we weren’t sure how she would do in rentals so we felt better bringing our own.

She was the smallest in our group and had the biggest bag just because of everything I felt she needed. As first time parents taking a baby on vacation for the first time it was better to be over prepared than under prepared.

It’s nice that now we know a bit better and can pack a lot less. It also helps that we live a lot closer and don’t need to pack as much anyway.

Was there anything you packed and regretted? Or didn’t pack and wish you had?

    • Comfort items

Posted at 1:12 pm by CS, on July 25, 2019

Cameron has two items that are her sense of comfort, or her security items if you will. I’m sure in some point in life we have all had some sort of security item, or ritual, or habit that just made us feel safe.

For Cameron they are her pacifier, or as we call it her Nubby, and her comfy blanket. Now I know what some of you are thinking, she’s almost 2, she shouldn’t have a nubby, well she does but we try to only give it to her at nap time and bedtime, and we will slowly wean her off that as well. But I’ve also learned to pick my battles, and I’ve found that when she is feeling under the weather, or out of her comfort zone that her pacifier does help calm her down, and if it’s having a toddler tantrum in the middle of the store, or giving her her pacifier for 5 minutes, I’ll choose the pacifier. When she gets up in the morning, we allow her to keep it until breakfast and take it from her, then she gets it back at nap time, and the same goes for after nap time where we take it after her snack until bedtime.

Her blanket she has all the time. It’s always sort of near her when she’s playing, and she does sleep with it. I wish she had chosen a smaller and not so heavy blanket, but it just didn’t happen that way. We have thought of cutting it down and making it smaller, but I feel like she would realize that and it would not go over well. She loves this blanket, and it gives her a sense of home and security. We will try to wean her off of taking it into public soon I’m sure, although right now if we are out and about, it comes with us but stays in the car and she does realize that.

Do your kiddos have anything that comforts them? Or anything they need to bring with them always?

    • Sleep when they sleep

Posted at 1:50 pm by CS, on May 9, 2019

Easier said than done. When she was a newborn I was always trying to run around to get stuff done around the house while she napped. And now she’s down to one nap a day and then bedtime. So I really don’t get much done, nap times are now for writing blog posts, or doing the dishes, folding laundry, or getting dinner prepared.

We did get lucky though. When we would transition her down from 3-2-1 naps, we sort of did it cold turkey. Just one day we did it and moved on. She’s a very big “if she doesn’t see it/use it/do it she won’t miss it” type of girl, so those transitional periods really never bothered her. Now that’s not to say we didn’t have some hiccups and early risings or middle of the night wake ups, but they were fairly few and far between.

Now I know this probably means, if we have a second child we won’t get as lucky!

I don’t want to jinx ourselves but we got fairly lucky with how she does sleep. She was sleeping pretty much through the night pretty early on. And although she’s had some sleep regressions we have gotten lucky with how we were able to “sleep train” her. Now I put that in quotes because I don’t feel that we really trained her in any way. At the moment if she arises in the middle of the night, I wait 10 minutes because most times she will put herself right back to sleep. In the chance she doesn’t, the 10 minutes sort of shows her that we won’t rush right in if she cries, but that we will come check on her. And if this situation repeats during the night, we just circle back and do it all again. In the morning the rule is, we do not go and get her until she is standing up in her crib waiting by the door end of her crib. For us this way, we get her breakfast started, tidy the house up, and other things, because some days, if she makes a noise at 6-6:30 she will put herself back to sleep for a little bit so we don’t want to rush in the first sign of noise and risk keeping her from more sleep. At 18 months, she now sleeps 7:30-7am on MOST days, with a nap from 12-1:30/2. Now I say most days because some days she will rise about 6:30, or will take a longer or shorter nap. Just depends on the activities and excitements of the day, but a good 80% is the same sleep schedule.

Now for what she sleeps with, she has a musical giraffe, a few pacifiers, and her blanket. Her blanket is her absolute favorite, didn’t think she would cling to something so young, but here we are, so that will be a fun transition when we need to wean her off of that. She’s now only getting her pacifier for bedtime and nap-time and that wasn’t a very hard transition so hoping the blanket won’t be either.

Sleep is one topic I had a lot of questions on, but it was also a topic that you really had to see what related most to you by doing and testing our different options.
